How to Become a Hot Air Balloon Pilot?
1. Define Your Goal
Before starting your piloting journey, it is important to decide what type of hot air balloon pilot you want to become. Is your goal only recreational flights or commercial activities?
2. Assess Your Health
You must have a medical certificate proving you are physically and mentally fit for flight. In Turkey, this is provided by a Class 2 medical certificate from Aviation Medical Centers.
3. Licensing and Training Process
Candidates must register at an SHGM authorized flight school. Theoretical Training: Air traffic rules, meteorology, navigation, balloon structure and systems. Flight Training: Minimum 16 hours of flight time required.
4. Commercial Piloting and Category System
Category A: Min 50 hours – Max 4 passengers. Category B: Min 100 hours – Max 10 passengers. Category C: Min 200 hours – Max 18 passengers. Category D: Min 300 hours – Max 20 passengers.
5. Advanced Operations and Special Requirements
For balloons over 425,000 cubic feet: BPL Group-D license at least 12 months old, minimum 550 hours total flight experience. For operations over 550,000 cubic feet: BPL Group-D license and 1500 hours total flight experience.
